  1. Who are using these? I have been using the standard plain old XL-170's on a few of my basses for years....As well as some of the Dunlops also....Read mostly good things about the NYXL's....Just picking brains here...Thanks!!!
  18. I have not yet tried them either....BUT I do have a set of NYXL .10s on my Telecaster....Sound and feel great.....And better tuning stability on that guitar anyway...Just a thought
  22. Best bass strings on the market period IMO!
    They give you the best of Stainless Steel and Nickel in one string!
    And they last a very long time.
    Yes they are expensive, but totally worth it to me!

    A lot of people on here talk about Dunlop Super Bright nickels being the best strings, but IMO those strings are thin sounding and do not have the depth of tone as the NYXLs!
    Daddario hit a big home run with these strings!
    The only negative is the price.

  30. I believe the NYXLs have a little more tension than the Dunlop Super Brights, but they have slightly less tension than regular XLs.
  34. I'll echo this with one difference:
    I'm ordering them individually as I'm getting the tapered ones on my B, E & A strings on the 6 string and the same tapered E & A on my 4 string.
    I was a beta tester and liked them originally, but it took trying the tapered B, E & A to get me off my much more economical EXL-170's.

    I actually order a 4 string set (non tapered 45-105), then add a single 130 tapered.

    I tried the regular 5 string non tapered sets, but did not like the non tapered B string at all. I guess I only prefer my B string tapered and all other strings non tapered.

  42. When I beta tested, I liked the regular set fine, but didn't feel it was enough of an improvement (over the 170's) to justify double the price. Trying the tapers is what got me to change.

    I've kept track of my last set of NYXLs- I got 34 gigs out of them before the "zing" faded. Out of that 34 gigs, less than a dozen were indoors. This doesn't include practice & rehearsals. They still had plenty of life for someone looking for less sizzle than me. Still stayed in tune great. I have used these on all my basses for the last year, and can't say enough good things about em. I'm sold on them. Previously I used the Labella RX stainless or D'aDdario Prosteels, and averaged about 10-12 gigs before my tone left. In the grand scheme of things, they are actually cheaper.
  51. I've bought 4 sets of them, all .105 4 string. My Aerodyne J loves them. My other basses, not so much. I've had them on and quickly off a USA P, and my Magnificent 7 PJ, in addition to below.

    I bought a set yesterday and put them on my new Old Smoothie Stingray. A D G were fine, but E was dull and thuddy, very unlike the other 3 strings. Off they came, nickel SuperBrites on, there we go.

    Bottom line, no more for me.

    Didn't work for me. They're fine strings. Clear and clean sounding. But I thought they were devoid of any character. Just not my thing. I pulled them after a few weeks.

    I thought they might be a good choice for someone who uses a lot of effects however.

  59. "Devoid of any character" - you mean like XL's? These sound like XL's on steroids and with a bit more class based on everybody's opinion.

    Wouldn't know. I don't use XLs.

    Guitarist GF tried a set on two of her Strats. She didn't mych care for them either.

    Must be a "family" thing. ;)

  67. I've tried XL Nickels on a few occasions. They're not bad strings at all, just very neutral. In some circumstances that would be very beneficial and quite a few players use them in the studio for that very reason.

    Lately I've come to the conclusion that two of the best roundwounds in the world (at least for me) are DR Fatbeams and EB Cobalts.

    I've mainly been using DRs of various flavors for a number of years now. I still keep a bass strung with Rotos because nothing else sounds quite like them and I'm used to their rough finish since I bought my first set back around 1974 and I've been using them ever since.

    The only D'Addario string I ever used that I really liked were the original copper "Reds" - which are not to be confused with the godawful coated strings they're calling Reds today.

  76. I've tried Hi Beams and SS Low Riders as well. They are good strings but I think Fatbeams were created by bass gods. Every player should try them at least once. I use them on my ESP Jazz and they don't seem to die at all - they just get better.
    On my Carvin LB75 Cobalts sit really nicely on that bass but it's a very finicky instrument for some reason.

    Been awhile since I've had a Fatbeam set on something. I tend to veer towards nickels most days. However, I've got a new Gibson EB due for strings…so maybe I'll get reacquainted with this particular set.
